DAVID WHEALY - PRINCIPAL
David is the principal of entertainment legal firm DWA and is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of NSW.
David is regarded as one of the leading and most experienced entertainment legal practitioners in Australia, possessing over 20+ years’ entertainment legal experience including senior executive positions with Omnilab Media, Holding Redlich, Beyond, ABC TV and PolyGram.
David’s areas of expertise include copyright, trademarks, Australian and international film and television financing, production and chain of title agreements, music, advertising, distribution, production and marketing funding, and sales. He has been in involved in providing legal advice to Australian and international clients ranging from studios, distributors, broadcasters, major production companies, talent and creative across the globe across hundreds of film, television, advertising, music and theatre projects.
David has also executive produced cumulatively over $350 million worth of film and television production in his career.
ELLE CURRAN - SENIOR ASSOCIATE
Elle rejoins DWA after working as Director of Business and Legal Affairs at Screen Producers Australia (SPA). Elle continues to act as a consultant on legal and industrial matters for SPA.
Elle Curran has previously held roles at Flame Media, ITV Studios and the ABC and has had extensive experience providing legal and business services to a broad range of parties in the screen industry.
She has extensive commercial experience in the media and entertainment industry, predominantly in television distribution and programming, across all platforms and genres and is well versed in negotiating content licensing arrangements, including books, merchandise and music publishing.
ANDREW MICHAELSON - ASSOCIATE
Andrew holds both a Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne. He joined the firm in September 2018 after previously working on the legal team at Screen Australia.
Andrew provides legal services to feature film and television producers and other members of the creative industries, with particular experience in development and co-production arrangements, Producer Offset applications, above the line personnel agreements, agency grants and investments.
BROOKE CLARKE - PARALEGAL
Brooke is the DWA Paralegal, providing drafting, research and administrative support.
Brooke comes from a commercial background and has specific experience in complex contract negotiation and cross-border transactions. She is currently studying a Juris Doctor at the University of New South Wales (UNSW).
